Description
Silver Lace Fern (Pteris ensiformis) has delicate green fronds marked with bright silvery-white centers. Its patterned foliage adds contrast to shaded porch containers and indoor plant displays. With good growing conditions, plants may reach approximately 2–4 feet tall and 1–3 feet wide.
Growing Silver Lace Fern in Alabama
Provide bright, indirect light or filtered shade, avoiding harsh afternoon sun. Use a loose, organic-rich potting mix that drains freely but holds some moisture. Water when the surface begins to dry; do not let the root ball become bone dry or leave the pot standing in water. Higher humidity helps prevent crispy frond edges, especially indoors during winter heating. Feed lightly about once a month during active growth.
This tropical fern is not reliably hardy through central or northern Alabama winters. Keep it in a protected container and bring it indoors before cold weather; sheltered outdoor culture is best reserved for frost-free conditions.
