Description
Pink Mist scabiosa, also called pincushion flower, produces soft pink-lavender blooms held on slender stems above a tidy mound of gray-green foliage. Its flowers draw butterflies and other pollinators. Mature plants commonly reach around 18 inches tall and spread about 15 inches wide, making them useful near the front of a perennial border.
Growing Pink Mist in Alabama
Provide full sun to light afternoon shade and, above all, well-drained soil. Water new plants consistently while roots establish, then water during extended dry periods rather than keeping the soil constantly wet. Removing spent flowers encourages additional blooms from late spring into the growing season. Scabiosa generally prefers cooler conditions and may struggle with Alabama’s hot, wet summers, especially in heavy clay. Raised beds, improved drainage, mulch kept off the crown, and good air circulation can improve performance. Although often listed as hardy in USDA zones 3–7, its persistence in the Deep South depends on the site and summer conditions.
