Description
‘Butterfly Blue’ pincushion flower (Scabiosa) forms a tidy mound of gray-green foliage topped with soft lavender-blue blooms. Its distinctive pincushion-like flowers attract butterflies and add a light, airy look to sunny borders and patio containers.
Growing ‘Butterfly Blue’
Choose full sun and well-drained soil. In Alabama, especially in areas with heavy clay, improve drainage or grow in a raised bed or container. Water regularly until established, then avoid keeping the crown wet for long periods. Removing spent flowers can encourage repeat bloom. Afternoon shade may help during the most intense summer heat, but too much shade reduces flowering.
Size: Flowering stems can reach about 18 inches, with a mound roughly 15 inches wide. Season: Flowers appear from late spring and may repeat into cooler fall weather. Summer heat and humidity can limit performance in parts of the Deep South.
