Description

Huernia zebrina. Native to South Africa the Lifesaver Plant is a unique looking succulent, with spiked lobes that grow straight up when the plant is young and tend to lean over and trail as the plant matures. At maturity these succulents measure about 6″ wide and the stems can be 6-8″ tall or long. The ideal growing conditions of the Lifesaver Plant are well draining soil in a well-draining pot, sitting in partial sun, and being watered adequately based on the season. In the growing season the plant needs water when the soil around it is dry or about once a week, while in the dormant season it only needs watering about once a month. During the growing season this succulent can benefit from being fertilized once per month with a succulent and cactus fertilizer or with regular plant food, being sure to dilute by half.  In these growing conditions the Lifesaver Plant will produce a cream-ish yellow star shaped bloom with a red circular center in the spring to summer months. This is a perineal succulent that rarely needs repotting as they prefer a crowded environment. Pruning and cutting is done by preference as neither is needed for the plant to thrive. The hardiness zones of the Lifesaver Plant are 9b-11.
