Description
Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) is a clump-forming evergreen to semi-evergreen fern valued for its colorful new fronds. Young growth emerges coppery bronze to reddish gold before maturing to glossy green. Arching fronds create a soft, layered texture in shady borders and woodland plantings. Mature plants are commonly about 2 feet tall and wide.
Growing in Alabama and the Southeast
In Alabama, grow Autumn Fern in partial to full shade with organically rich, moist but well-drained soil. Morning light is generally acceptable, while harsh afternoon sun can burn the fronds. Apply mulch to moderate soil temperature and water deeply during dry periods, particularly while plants establish. Remove damaged or old fronds in late winter as fresh growth appears. Once established, this hardy perennial provides reliable foliage interest in many Southeast gardens.
