Description
Red purslane is a low-growing, succulent-leaved flowering plant with vivid red blooms that brighten sunny baskets, window boxes, and garden edges. Its spreading habit typically reaches about 4–8 inches high and 14–16 inches across. Flowers can attract visiting bees and butterflies during warm weather.
Growing Red Purslane in Alabama
Plant outdoors after the last frost in a spot receiving full sun. Choose fast-draining soil or a container with drainage holes; purslane handles heat and short dry periods better than constantly wet roots. Water newly planted specimens until established, then allow the top of the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid heavy fertilizing, which can encourage leaves at the expense of flowers.
