‘Brandywine Red’ tomato is a classic indeterminate heirloom grown for its large, red, thin-skinned beefsteak fruits and rich tomato flavor. This old-fashioned slicing tomato is especially appealing for sandwiches and fresh summer meals.
Growing in Alabama
Plant after frost danger has passed in a sunny bed with fertile, well-drained soil. Give vines sturdy staking or caging early, since indeterminate plants continue growing and setting fruit over an extended season. Water deeply and consistently, mulch to reduce soil splash, and watch for leaf diseases in humid weather. Good airflow and avoiding overhead irrigation can help. Very high summer temperatures can reduce fruit set, so early planting is useful.
Harvest: Approximately 80–100 days under suitable conditions. Fruit: Typically around 8–12 ounces, although individual tomatoes vary. As an heirloom, it does not carry the specific disease-resistance package advertised for many modern hybrids.
