Description
‘Atkinson’ tomato is a classic Southern slicing variety developed at Auburn University and introduced in 1966. It produces firm, meaty, red, globe-shaped tomatoes with the rich, old-fashioned flavor many gardeners want from a homegrown slicer.
Growing ‘Atkinson’ Tomatoes
This indeterminate tomato grows on vigorous vines that can approach 6 feet, so provide a sturdy cage or trellis. Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil after the danger of frost has passed. Water deeply and consistently at the base of the plant, mulch to help stabilize moisture, and give the foliage good airflow during Alabama’s humid summers. Harvest when fruits are fully colored but still firm. The original listing notes tolerance to Fusarium race 1, nematodes, and gray leaf spot; tolerance does not mean plants are immune to disease.
Harvest: Approximately 70 days under suitable growing conditions. Fruit: About 8–16 ounces. Habit: Indeterminate, approximately 6-foot vines.
