Description

Ajuga reptans ‘Mahogany’ (bugleweed) is a low-growing perennial groundcover with deep burgundy to nearly black leaves and short spikes of vivid blue flowers. Foliage usually stays around 4–6 inches high, making it an attractive edging plant, groundcover, or filler in mixed planters. Its dark leaves contrast nicely with bright green and chartreuse plants.

Growing in Alabama and the Southeast

Plant in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade to morning sun. Ajuga tolerates some sun when moisture is adequate, but afternoon shade can reduce stress during Alabama summers. Water regularly during establishment, then during prolonged dry spells. Good airflow and drainage are especially important in humid weather to reduce crown problems. Plants spread by runners and may move beyond their original space, so edge or divide clumps as needed. Mulch lightly without burying the crowns.
