Description

Salvia officinalis ‘Berggarten’ is a garden sage valued for broad, aromatic silver-gray leaves used in savory cooking. This bushy perennial herb typically reaches about 1–2 feet tall and can spread 2–3 feet in suitable conditions.

Growing in Alabama

Give sage at least six hours of sun and fast-draining soil. Raised beds or containers are especially useful where Alabama clay stays wet during humid summers. Water new plants regularly, but let established plants dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overfeeding and heavy mulch piled against the crown. Harvest leaves lightly and trim to maintain a compact shape. Good airflow helps reduce fungal problems.
