Description

Macho fern (Nephrolepis biserrata) makes a dramatic statement with long, glossy green fronds that arch from a generous clump. A mature plant can reach roughly 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide or more under favorable conditions. Its bold texture works well in large hanging baskets, shaded porches, and tropical-style patio containers.

Give Macho fern bright indirect light or filtered shade, an organic-rich, well-drained potting mix, and regular watering to keep the root zone evenly moist without becoming soggy. Alabama summer humidity suits it, but hot afternoon sun and dry wind can scorch fronds. A light application of balanced fertilizer during active growth is usually enough. Remove yellow or damaged fronds at the base. This tropical fern is generally hardy in Zones 9–10, so protect it from freezes in most Alabama locations by moving pots to a bright sheltered space indoors.
