Emerald Queen sword fern (Nephrolepis obliterata) features upright, softly arching green fronds. Mature plants can reach roughly 2–3 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide, making them attractive in porch containers and shaded garden displays.
Growing Emerald Queen Fern in Alabama
Provide bright filtered light or partial shade, protecting the fronds from strong afternoon sun. Use an organic-rich, free-draining potting mix and keep it consistently moist without allowing the roots to stand in water. Humid Alabama summers suit this fern, but containers can still dry quickly in warm wind. Feed lightly during active growth and trim brown fronds. In areas with freezing winters, bring containers indoors before frost; it is generally hardy in zones 9–11.
