Description
Senecio stapeliiformis. Native to South Africa the Pickle Plant gets its name from the pickle shaped stems with soft spines that grow from the plant’s roots. At maturity this succulent can grow to be 18″ tall with each stem measuring about 1″ in diameter and can be divided and repotted in the early spring. The ideal growing conditions of the Pickle Plant are sandy well-draining soil, placed somewhere to receive full sun to light shade or bright indirect light if indoors, and adequate watering. Watering this succulent should occur moderately in the summer, typically watering about once per week, and occasionally in the winter, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Fertilizer should be diluted and applied every 4-6 weeks throughout the growing season. Under these conditions the Pickle Plant can produce clumps of tiny red-ish orange blooms in the late spring to early fall. The hardiness zones of the Pickle Plant are 9-11.
