Ants are normal in a healthy garden. They move soil and clean up dead bugs. They can still cause trouble when a large nest forms near roots. Ants can also guard aphids that feed on plants.

The best fix is to find what draws the ants in. Food, water, and other pests are common causes. Fix those first. Then treat the nest only if you still need to.

Why Ants Come to the Garden

Watch the ants for a few minutes. If they walk up plant stems, check the leaves for aphids or scale. These bugs make a sweet liquid called honeydew. Ants feed on it and may guard the bugs.

Start With Cleanup

If aphids are the cause, deal with them first. A firm spray of water can knock many aphids off strong plants. A labeled insect soap may also help. Test a small spot first.

Use Dry Dust With Care

Food-grade diatomaceous earth can kill ants that walk through a dry layer. It works only while dry. Rain and watering make it less useful.

Do not dust open flowers where bees are at work. Keep dust out of your eyes and lungs. Follow the label.

Be Careful With Home Sprays

Strong vinegar and plant oils may push ants away for a short time. They may also burn leaves. Use them with care and keep them off tender plants.

Cinnamon may break up an ant trail. It will not fix a large nest. Treat the cause instead.

Use Bait for a Large Nest

Bait can work better than a quick spray. Worker ants carry bait back to the nest. That can reach more of the colony.

Pick a bait made for the place you need to treat. Keep it away from kids, pets, and wildlife. Do not spray bug killer on a bait station. The spray may stop ants from taking the bait home.

Skip Homemade Poison Bait

Home mixes made with sugar and borax are hard to dose. A strong mix may kill worker ants too fast. It may also put pets or kids at risk. A ready-to-use bait with a clear label is a safer choice.

Keep Ants From Coming Back

Keep beds neat. Check plants for aphids. Pick ripe fruit before it falls. Move pots, boards, and other items that hide nests.
